I'm Terry and I'm a mother of 3, Amanda being my eldest at 23, followed by Trevor at 21 and Mathew at 8. I'm recently widowed, my husband Steve (which some of you might know) died of Motor Neurone Disease in August 2004, we had been married for 26 years. We've been in the Split Screen Van Club since 1987 and became committee members a few years later.. We also joined T2OC when they first started 15 years ago.
Rosie, our Van won "Shed of the Year/Still Rolling" award not just once but twice!! (1999 and 2002).
As some might know, Steve collected several vans over the years, and most of them are still on the road, after spending some time in our front garden looking for a good home.
We've owned a 1973 orange and white bay MAH 508L from 1985 to 1987, then we bought our 1967 split screen TPU 711E (Rosie) for £50!
As mentioned we paid £50 in 1987 for this van and ran her pretty much as she was with Steve doing most of the mechanical maintenance and some bodywork over the years. I have lots of tales to tell of camping, breakdowns etc over the years and have traced her history back to the first of her previous 4 owners.
After Steve's death I decided that the VW community and Rosie had been such an important part of our families lives that I had to continue using Rosie as much as I could. Rosie needed a bit of attention. I agonised as to whether to have restoration work done or not and how far to go. It made sense if I was to have the welding done to have a respray. I took her to Paintbox and Simon agreed to do a sympathetic restoration. They repaired rather than replaced and we agreed not to touch certain areas, including the front badge, so that they were as my husband had left her. I took out all of the original Canterbury Pitt interior and with a little help from Amanda sanded and revarnished it all, putting it back was fun!!.
Since getting Rosie back from Paintbox she has been out and about loads. We did a jeans advert and filming for Alien Autopsy (ended up on the cutting room floor though!). Rosie also won a 'Show n Shine' award at Brighton Breeze 2005 and has just won 'Van of the Year 2006' from the T2OC. These awards have come after Paintbox did their bit but I am sure Simon will tell you that Rosie was a good solid and straight UK bus before he did anything. I am sure my husband would be very proud and pleased with the way she looks now.
