daveDave - Forum ID: Technohippy. Location: Chelmsford

Hi I'm Dave. Technohippy is a name derived from my liking for rather too much electronic music and my affinity with computers and website design... as for the "hippy" bit... I suspect that has something to do with my appearance ;-) Generally at meets I respond to "OI Hippy" when its shouted in my general direction.

Volkwagens were never supposed to be an obsession, I've always liked 'different' cars and had a selection of Triumph Dolomites, a rather rapid ricer Mitsubishi Galant GTi and a Lotus Sunbeam among other things before getting the ' bay' in 2003 after years of putting tents up, finally had enough of life under canvas and went for "Der Schteel Tent on Veels" and never looked back.

It didn't take long for a means of having a holiday in comfort to turn into a total fixation and in the early part of 2006 I got rid of my trusty relaible daily driver Citroen Xantia and replaced it with another VW, a 1982 Mk1 Golf GTi and March 2007 saw the addition of dub numebr three, a beach buggy. Now it seems a case of work to fund the Volkswagens no matter what. Well its far more interesting than a mortgage anyway!

'Moog' the Technobus

Description: 1977 bay window 1600cc twin port with a few modifications.

History: Started life as a panel van doing deliveries, several owners later it had been painted exterior gloss blue with a brush before being sprayed the dodgy beige it is now. Someone put some after market windows in it at some point and built a camper interior which left a little to bedesired to say the least.

Model

1977 Bay window panel van

Engine

1600 twin port aircooled type 2 engine new from VEGE July 2003, Weber Twin 40 IDF carbs, oil breather kit and an EMPI twin quiet pack exhaust, other than that its standard in there - it just makes a big noise :-)

Rolling chassis

Adjustable front beam with Creative Engineering's Weedeater adjusters and dropped around 4ins at the front in Summer 2005, stock height at the rear, quickshift plate, the rest is mainly stock but all new front discs and calipers, rear drums, master cylinder, wheel bearings, front shocks, steering damper, brake lines, flexi hoses and gear linkage bushes in 2004.

Exterior

Austin Rover Champagne (beige!) with cream roof (by previous owner), satin black bumpers and grille, 95% limo black tint to rear windows, smoked rear lenses and a towbar :-)

Interior

Ex-Fiat Strada Abarth tilting 'fishnet' Recaro bucket seats with floor risers removed, Dormobile interior finished in black vinyl, checkerplate floor and a few custom bits.

Wheels

7J Fondmetal Mercedes wheels with FULDA 205 x 60 x 14 high load tyres polished rims with black centres

'Golfie' the Technogolf

Description: 1982 Mk1 Golf GTi fairly standard

History: This car began life in Essex and for the first years of its life was looked after by the German Car Company in Southend. Its had 6 owners including me. After being in Southend it went briefly to kent, then Watford before being bought by the guy I got it from who lives in Camberley

Model

1982 Mk1 Golf GTi lhasa green with no sunroof (which in itself is pretty rare thing)

Modifications

Not really very many modifications, its been lowered a little, it has poly suspension bushes to make the handling a little bit tighter (well like a go kart to be honest) and some strut braces to help with that too.

When I bought it the car was fitted with Scirocco Pirelli P-Slot wheels (pictured) but I have now changed them back to the original Tarantula style wheels. If anything I'm de-modifying it.

'Fuggy' the Technobuggy

Description: Mk1 LWB Fibrefab Rat

History: This car began life as a 1960 beetle and at some point during the 1970s was turned into this beach buggy.

Model

Mk1 LWB Fibrefab Rat with

Engine

1600 twin port aircooled type 1 engine with dual cannon buggy exhaust :-)

Rolling chassis

Built ona one year only 1960 VW beetle chassis with a 1972 > gearbox grafted to it this buggy still runs the original wide 5 drums all round and king pin front suspension.

Exterior

Still presently in its original 1970's metalflake paint sunfaded burgundy. The "anus" A numberp[late is a later addition, the original palte was transferred off in the 70s and still rides around on a Merc to this day TUX 809 I want you back. DVLA have said they'll issue a free age related plate to correct the screwup but I guess I'll get round to sorting that out one day.

Interior

Cobra seats and a bit of carpet - no mod cons!

Wheels

BIG! Chevy 5 pattern 11J rims running General 295 x 60 x 20 rubber on the rear and a cute set of slotmags on the front.
